This cycle of digital conferences is part of the project “Planet UAB: The journey to the other – equals in differences” organised by the Gabinete during the academic year 2020-2021, with the support of the Solidarity Fund of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, which organised a series of activities and awareness-raising actions based on the concept of the UAB campus as a “planet” and which dealt with major issues such as the culture of peace, sustainability, the environment and interculturality, among others.

According to Santiago Tejedor, director of the Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación (UAB), these meetings will “allow us to talk about the adventure of exploration, discovery and learning that means learning, research and training“. They will address issues related to culture, otherness, health education, the environment, information technologies and interculturality, among others.

This cycle was inaugurated with a talk entitled ‘Story seekers. Jungles, jaguars and volcanoes‘. The writers Sabrina Duque, Joseph Zárate and Santiago Wills explained their different journalistic projects focused on social and natural themes and debated the different characteristics that make up the journalistic chronicle. All of them analysed how narrative, literary journalism can be carried out, far from immediacy. Empathy, observation, the search for details, documentation, the search for sources and creativity were some of the topics discussed.

Sabrina Duque is a 2019 Michael Jacobs Travel Writing Fellow for her project Nicaragua: villages, lava and ashes. She is an Ecuadorian journalist, chronicler and translator. Throughout her career she has published for various publishers and newspapers in Portugal, Brazil, Italy, the United States, Ecuador and Uruguay.

Joseph Zárate is a journalist and editor. He was deputy editor of the magazines Etiqueta Negra and Etiqueta Verde. In 2016 he received the Ortega y Gasset Award for Best Story or Investigative Journalism and in 2018 the Gabriel García Márquez Award, in the Text category. Author of ‘Guerras del interior’.

Santiago Wills is a journalist. He studied Philosophy at the National University of Colombia and holds a Master’s degree in Journalism from Columbia University in New York. Winner of the Michael Jacobs Travel Writing Fellowship in 2021, for his project entitled “The Shadow of the Jaguar: Capturing the Spirit of America”.

This work is part of Frontera Crónica‘s objectives to offer training and informative tools and resources that help journalists to develop their work better. The aim is to enable news professionals to adapt to new news contexts and new audience profiles; content, formats and platforms. Work is also being carried out on the creation of the project’s own website.

This initiative, which included two practical workshops, two days of reflection and a series of debates, is conceived as a collaborative space for co-creation between journalists, teachers and researchers. Among its objectives are the recognition of the work of journalists in scenarios of violence, the proposal of new narratives around the borders marked by migration and violence, the facilitation of Mexican journalists working on the border with the US, and the creation of a new space for the exchange of information between journalists, teachers and researchers. The project also aims to promote the creation of a directory of resources and platforms that improve their stories and content, the generation of citizen commitment interested in learning about other types of narratives on migration, women and violence in the border region, the awareness of Mexican and UAB university students of social problems and the promotion of media literacy in journalistic and non-journalistic scenarios.

The project has the collaboration of the cybermedia Revista 5W, specialised in migration, the Gabo Foundation for Journalism, the Baja Autonomous University of Baja California (Tijuana) and the network of journalists in Mexico “Yo sí soy periodista“.

This one-year project is funded by the European Media and Information Foundation (EMIF), which aims to support initiatives related to information verification and media literacy, as well as research projects to address the phenomenon of misinformation in Europe.

Media literacy is one of the main lines of research of the Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación. This project will work on a literature review to know the state of disinformation in Europe and how to combat it through media literacy, the creation of a comparative mapping of policies on disinformation in member countries and the identification of good practices and the elaboration of a final report.

On 2 October, Santiago Tejedor, Cristina Pulido and Maria José Recoder, members of the Cabinet and the project, participated in the ‘EMIF Annual Event: Funding the Fight Against Disinformation‘, held in Lisbon. The event brought together different media organisations, researchers, NGOs and policy makers from all over Europe to discuss the challenges and opportunities of fighting against disinformation in Europe.

Santiago Tejedor, director of the UAB Office and the Department of Journalism, was in charge of welcoming the event. Maria José Recoder and Cristina Pulido then showed and explained to the attendees the layout of the website.

Throughout the event, the professionals, teachers, professors and researchers present exchanged educational scenarios from different Ibero-American regions. A noteworthy phenomenon that took up a large part of the debate was that which many information faculties are experiencing: students dropping out of their studies at Ibero-American universities.

One of the most important objectives agreed upon was to function as an exchange network that would benefit communication and journalism in different Ibero-American regions. In this way, the meeting focused, among other points, on analysing the challenges posed, “not only by social networks and traditional media but also by these new figures of influencers and tiktokers who pose important challenges for what is rigorous journalism”, as Recoder stated.

Finally, a review was made of the evolution of the Red Innovacom, which brings together more than a dozen Ibero-American universities. “It is a great opportunity to promote synergies between universities, to twin initiatives and to build together a space for training, reflection and growth focused on journalism and the preparation of future professionals,” Tejedor stressed.

The Red Innovacom brings together teachers and researchers from Iberoamerica working in the field of journalism training and research. It focuses on defining and promoting lines of action to address the training challenges that the new communication scenario demands of communication professionals in three main areas: teachers, students and teaching strategies. The Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación and the Arab Academy for Science Technology & Maritime Transport (AASTMT) have organized this academic exchange space, characterized by learning through virtual classes, which aims to promote intercultural dialogue between students from the Cairo and Alexandria campuses. During this time, students will strengthen their skills in different fields and will deal with multiple topics such as the production of multimedia and digital content, introduction to new technologies, programming with Python, data analysis and big data, main applications of artificial intelligence or strategies and uses of sustainable development in international law, among others.

The agreement between the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the Arab Academy for Science Technology and Transportation of Egypt aims to promote intercultural dialogue and synergies between the two institutions.

Students of the Master in Travel Journalism, the Master in Environmental Communication and the Master in Communication and Education participated in this twentieth session with Arturo Larena, entitled ‘EFE Verde: A global platform for news and environmental journalism’. The journalist spoke about the work carried out within the environmental news and journalism platform EFE Verde, a news division of EFE that works on different environmental issues such as renewable energies, biodiversity and sustainable development. The director of the agency analyzed the evolution of environmental information in the media and stressed the importance of keeping this journalistic specialization away from eco-fatigue, a concept that refers to fatigue due to excess of information on ecological issues. In this sense, he showed the students the routines of journalistic production in the field of environmental journalism.

Arturo Larena is an environmental journalist. Director of EFE Verde and the area of Science and Future of the EFE Agency. He has been awarded the National Environment Award, the BBVA Foundation Award for Biodiversity Conservation and the WWF Golden Panda Award, as one of the five Spaniards who have contributed most to environmental culture from the media.

The recognition seeks to highlight the journalistic or communicational trajectory of professionals committed to their work. The event, organised by the UAB Communication and Education Office and the UAB Master’s Degree in Travel Journalism, will take place at 9:00 a.m. on Monday 21 November in the Aula Magna of the UAB Faculty of Communication Sciences.

Rosa María Calaf (Barcelona, 1945), a graduate in Law and Journalism, has dedicated her life to journalism and travel, making her the RTVE correspondent with the broadest and most diverse career. From her correspondent’s post in Moscow, Vienna, Hong Kong, Rome, New York, Beijing and Buenos Aires, she has worked informing the world from an ethical point of view and with a strong commitment to good journalism.

He was a member of the staff of TVE from 1970 to 2009 and was a member of the founding team of the Catalan television station TV3 as director of programming and production (1982-1983). He has travelled to more than 180 countries and continues to travel the world. This year’s speakers include Rosa María Calaf, a Spanish journalist with a career spanning more than 26 years as a foreign correspondent for TVE, who will receive the Ítaca 2022 Award in recognition of her career and good practice of journalism. The Ítaca Prize, which in previous editions has been awarded to renowned journalists such as Martín Caparrós or Pepa Roma among others, is an award given by the UAB Communication and Education Office to highlight a career committed, through journalism, to human dignity, diversity and equality.

In the morning, from 9:50 to 11:00, Miguel Ángel Tobías, film director and creator of the audiovisual format ‘Españoles por el mundo’, will talk about his new documentary series ‘El camino interior‘, a work of 16 episodes in which the author walked the Camino de Santiago from León to Compostela and Finisterre, accompanied by prominent and recognised personalities to help others to transform their lives.

Afterwards, from 11:20 to 11:40, Júlia Pírez Curell and Laura Riba Singla , in charge of the UAB Reception Programme (Area of Cooperation and Education for Global Justice, Fundació Autònoma Solidària) will explain the social actions carried out by this university entity in the talk ‘Near the refuge: the university as a space for international protection‘. Within this space, Kelly Robledo, academic coordinator of the UAB Master in Travel Journalism, will talk about the project ‘Frontera Crónica: Cross-border journalism and co-creation workshop for the promotion of a critical view and the construction of other narratives on violence, women and migrations’, winner of the XXXIX call of the UAB Solidarity Fund for interuniversity cooperation projects led by PAS, PDI and students of the UAB. The lecturer shared with the students the characteristics of tourism of excellence. Some of the topics discussed within this sector were the digitisation of tourism and travel and sustainability: “Developing personalised tourism experiences is a necessity in the current scenario. We have opted for creativity, excellence and attention to detail”. The expert also spoke about the democratisation of travel and the massification of places and detailed the need to rethink the Spanish tourism model.

This work presents 10 chronicles of stories of adolescents of different ages, neighbourhoods and profiles who lived through the period of pandemic and confinement in solitude. Loneliness and mental health is the common thread of this interactive multimedia book, which is enriched with QR codes and includes video and audio interviews with experts, surveys and a list of resources and projects related to this topic. The prologue has been written by the writer Martín Caparrós.

“The journalistic research project Pandemials: Adolescence in times of coronavirus presents a descriptive, explanatory and exploratory work on how adolescents in Barcelona have lived the stage of forced confinement imposed by the coronavirus: their longings, their fears, their expectations, their frustrations, their bonds of friendship, their family life and the inevitable management of loneliness”.

The book answers the questions of how the Covid-19 pandemic is emerging and will affect adolescents in the near future, what role adolescents have given to social networks and other technological platforms as a result of the pandemic, how they understand and coexist with loneliness and how their relationship with their families and friends has changed. This includes a survey of 272 teenagers in the province of Barcelona to find out about their experiences of loneliness and 10 interviews with experts, teachers, social educators, anthropologists, journalists and psychologists: Carme Polina , technician of the Municipal Strategy against loneliness 2020-2030 of the Barcelona City Council, José Luis Adam , professor at the Faculty of Education of the International University of Catalonia, Raquel Terribas , Social Educator of the service ‘Aquí t’Escoltem’, Evaristo González , director of Institute and lecturer on ICT, Jaume Clavé , social educator of the service ‘Aquí t’escoltem’, José María Perceval , professor of journalism UAB, Lorena Campo Aráuz , doctor in Health, Psychology and Psychiatry, Joaquín Limonero , coordinator of the Research Group Stress and Health (GIES) of the UAB, Ingeborg Porcar , psychologist and director of the Unit of Trauma, Crisis and Conflicts UAB, and Jordi Grau professor of Social Anthropology UAB.

This research was the winner of the Montserrat Roig Award for journalism and social communication in Barcelona 2020 in the category “Promotion of journalistic research in the field of social welfare in Barcelona“.
