The first session, entitled ‘Story seekers. Jungles, jaguars and volcanoes‘, was given by writers Sabrina Duque, Joseph Zárate and Santiago Wills.

This cycle of digital conferences is part of the project “Planet UAB: The journey to the other – equals in differences” organised by the Gabinete during the academic year 2020-2021, with the support of the Solidarity Fund of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, which organised a series of activities and awareness-raising actions based on the concept of the UAB campus as a “planet” and which dealt with major issues such as the culture of peace, sustainability, the environment and interculturality, among others.

According to Santiago Tejedor, director of the Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación (UAB), these meetings will “allow us to talk about the adventure of exploration, discovery and learning that means learning, research and training“. They will address issues related to culture, otherness, health education, the environment, information technologies and interculturality, among others.

This cycle was inaugurated with a talk entitled ‘Story seekers. Jungles, jaguars and volcanoes‘. The writers Sabrina Duque, Joseph Zárate and Santiago Wills explained their different journalistic projects focused on social and natural themes and debated the different characteristics that make up the journalistic chronicle. All of them analysed how narrative, literary journalism can be carried out, far from immediacy. Empathy, observation, the search for details, documentation, the search for sources and creativity were some of the topics discussed.

Sabrina Duque is a 2019 Michael Jacobs Travel Writing Fellow for her project Nicaragua: villages, lava and ashes. She is an Ecuadorian journalist, chronicler and translator.
Red Innovacom, an initiative of the UAB Department of Journalism and Communication Sciences, was presented in a virtual session on 30 November. The event, which was attended by around fifty participants, presented the thematic lines and objectives of the network.

Santiago Tejedor, director of the UAB Office and the Department of Journalism, was in charge of welcoming the event. Maria José Recoder and Cristina Pulido then showed and explained to the attendees the layout of the website.

Throughout the event, the professionals, teachers, professors and researchers present exchanged educational scenarios from different Ibero-American regions. A noteworthy phenomenon that took up a large part of the debate was that which many information faculties are experiencing: students dropping out of their studies at Ibero-American universities.

One of the most important objectives agreed upon was to function as an exchange network that would benefit communication and journalism in different Ibero-American regions. In this way, the meeting focused, among other points, on analysing the challenges posed, “not only by social networks and traditional media but also by these new figures of influencers and tiktokers who pose important challenges for what is rigorous journalism”, as Recoder stated.

Finally, a review was made of the evolution of the Red Innovacom, which brings together more than a dozen Ibero-American universities. “It is a great opportunity to promote synergies between universities, to twin initiatives and to build together a space for training, reflection and growth focused on journalism and the preparation of future professionals,” Tejedor stressed.

Sign up to the network at this link

The Red Innovacom brings together teachers and researchers from Iberoamerica working in the field of journalism training and research. It focuses on defining and promoting lines of action to address the training challenges that the new communication scenario demands of communication professionals in three main areas: teachers, students and teaching strategies. In 2006, the 1st Conference on cyberjournalism took place: Teaching and lines of research in online journalism.

The Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación UAB starts working on the project ‘ Frontera Crónica: Workshop on cross-border journalism and co-creation for the promotion of a critical view and the construction of other narratives on violence, women and migrations ‘. In November, and for one year, this project will be developed in which two practical workshops, two days of reflection and a cycle of debates will be created in the border city of Tijuana (Mexico). The project is made up of an inter-university team of 11 women and 7 men.

Mexico has become the most dangerous country in the world to work as a journalist. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), a total of 142 journalists have been killed in the country between 1992 and 2022. This project, in collaboration with the online media Revista 5W, which specialises in migration, the Gabo Journalism Foundation, the Baja Autonomous University of Baja California (Tijuana) and the Mexican journalists’ network “Yo sí soy periodista” has established five lines of action: to promote cross-border journalism, spaces for reflection, co-creation and debate with journalists in Mexico, to modify news coverage of migratory movements, to present a different and rigorous informative treatment and create journalistic stories that raise awareness among the population, to contribute to promoting the narrative of stories of women leaders, transformers and generators of social change and to provide journalists with tools, platforms, networks and resources to react to complicated situations arising from threats, aggressions or other types of conflicts.

The project ‘Frontera Crónica: Workshop on cross-border journalism and co-creation for the promotion of a critical view and the construction of other narratives on violence, women and migration‘, promoted by the UAB Communication and Education Office and to be held in the border city of Tijuana (Mexico), will promote workshops aimed at women journalists.

This initiative, which has won the 39th call of the UAB Solidarity Fund for inter-university cooperation projects led by PAS, PDI and UAB students, reflects on the fact of being a woman journalist in Mexico, a reality where “violence and reprisals predominate in order to exercise freedom of expression”. In this sense, the project aims to educate about the importance of the role of the media in avoiding the dissemination of negative stereotypes of women and to help implement principles of news coverage that avoid re-victimisation, encouraging ‘the narrative of stories of women leaders, transformers and generators of social change’. To this end, it will create a workshop in which, based on the study and analysis of materials and real case studies, it will reflect on other types of narratives and perspectives.

This project will collaborate with the network of Mexican journalists “Yo sí soy periodista” working in the city of Tijuana and has the collaboration of the cybermedia Revista 5W, specialised in migrations, the Gabo Journalism Foundation and the Baja Autonomous University of Baja California (Tijuana). Among the members of the work team are Santiago Tejedor, teacher and project leader, Martín Caparrós, Argentinean journalist and chronicler, David Jiménez, journalist and writer, Agus Morales, director of 5W, and teachers and researchers from the Gabo de Comunicación y Educación UAB, the teachers of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Autonomous University of Baja California Diana Denisse Merchant Ley, María de Jesús Montoya Robles, Ángel Cilserio Ruiz Rios and Feliciano Castro Loya.
The project Planeta UAB: The Journey to the Other – Equal in Differences and the Master’s in Travel Journalism are organising the conference In Defence of Information, a virtual meeting to discuss and reflect on press freedom, the right to access information and the exercise of quality journalism with non-governmental organisations and long-standing initiatives. The event, which will include the participation of Reporters without Borders, Amnesty International, Open Arms, UNHCR and the Universitat Internacional de la Pau, will take place on Friday 16 April, from 12.30 to 17.30 Spain.

The day will begin with a presentation of the initiatives and work carried out by Reporters Without Borders, an organisation that defends access to news and information so that citizens can “know, understand and develop an opinion on what is at stake in the world and their environment”. It was created in 1995 with the aim of promoting journalistic freedom, pluralism and independence.

The second block will feature the participation of Amnesty International, “a global, independent organisation of more than 10 million people who act against injustice by defending human rights around the world”.

The dialogue will then move on to Open Arms, a non-profit organisation that operates in the Mediterranean Sea to protect people who try to reach European coasts fleeing from their countries due to war, poverty or persecution. They also promote education and knowledge about freedom, equality and migratory rights.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) will engage in the fourth dialogue of the day to share its actions and achievements. The agency, which has been leading and coordinating refugee protection worldwide since 1950, is tasked with providing vital assistance to refugees, asylum seekers, stateless or displaced persons and ensuring that their rights are respected.

The meeting will close with the participation of the Universitat de la Pau, an institution founded in 1984 with “the aim of creating the conditions and facilitating the necessary tools for training, debate, reflection and the exchange of opinions and experiences on conflict and peace-building”.

The faculties of Communication Sciences, Veterinary Science and Law join forces in a new project to generate critical awareness in the university community. Planet UAB: The Journey to the Other – Equal in Differences organises a series of activities and awareness-raising actions based on the concept of the Campus as a “planet” to address major issues such as the culture of peace, sustainability, the environment, interculturality, change and transformation.

The project is based on the need to encourage interdisciplinary debate and generate points of reflection between faculties that allow teachers, researchers and students from different subjects (degrees, master’s degrees, doctorates, faculties, etc.) to participate in joint initiatives to develop activities and projects. It also seeks to generate spaces for debate and exchange of ideas with the aim of improving the university, conceived as a “planet” where all points of view and all visions are of great value and importance.

The UAB, with more than 40,000 people between teaching staff, students and administrative staff, has more “inhabitants” than countries such as Liechtenstein (36,000), Monaco (33,500), San Marino (31,000) or the Vatican (800). Added to this is the variety of origins of the teachers, students and researchers who, every day, determine the campus, in a space where more than 50 nationalities, cultures and idiosyncrasies coexist. More than 6,000 students come from exchange programmes… This rich and stimulating mix is a great opportunity to encourage reflection and the fight against prejudice, exclusion, inequalities, environmental degradation and discrimination in all its dimensions. In the same way, the richness of our campus provides an excellent setting to encourage debate and the development of actions on coexistence, social equity, human rights and the different challenges related to education for global justification,” say the project members.

Planeta UAB is inspired by the elements of nature that many ancient cultures used to explain the world. These are different types of energy that are permanently interacting with each other. Based on them, a communication, training and awareness-raising strategy has been designed based on the following thematic pillars:

Water: Symbol of life, calm and well-being, it represents education in values and the culture of peace as a great challenge for our societies.

Earth: Conceived as a space of crossing, mixing and interaction, it represents the interculturality that defines our societies and, therefore, our university.

Air: From its meaning of current or breeze that cleans places, it represents sustainability, as a decisive and urgent commitment of our societies and of the planet in general.

Fire: Understood as the emission of light and heat, it represents the change and transformation that all societies need to advance and improve.

This project is supported by the Fons de Solidaritat de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
