The Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación UAB starts working on the project ‘ Frontera Crónica: Workshop on cross-border journalism and co-creation for the promotion of a critical view and the construction of other narratives on violence, women and migrations ‘. In November, and for one year, this project will be developed in which two practical workshops, two days of reflection and a cycle of debates will be created in the border city of Tijuana (Mexico). The project is made up of an inter-university team of 11 women and 7 men.

Mexico has become the most dangerous country in the world to work as a journalist. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), a total of 142 journalists have been killed in the country between 1992 and 2022. This project, in collaboration with the online media Revista 5W, which specialises in migration, the Gabo Journalism Foundation, the Baja Autonomous University of Baja California (Tijuana) and the Mexican journalists’ network “Yo sí soy periodista” has established five lines of action: to promote cross-border journalism, spaces for reflection, co-creation and debate with journalists in Mexico, to modify news coverage of migratory movements, to present a different and rigorous informative treatment and create journalistic stories that raise awareness among the population, to contribute to promoting the narrative of stories of women leaders, transformers and generators of social change and to provide journalists with tools, platforms, networks and resources to react to complicated situations arising from threats, aggressions or other types of conflicts.

The project ‘Frontera Crónica: Workshop on cross-border journalism and co-creation for the promotion of a critical view and the construction of other narratives on violence, women and migration‘, promoted by the UAB Communication and Education Office and to be held in the border city of Tijuana (Mexico), will promote workshops aimed at women journalists.

This initiative, which has won the 39th call of the UAB Solidarity Fund for inter-university cooperation projects led by PAS, PDI and UAB students, reflects on the fact of being a woman journalist in Mexico, a reality where “violence and reprisals predominate in order to exercise freedom of expression”. In this sense, the project aims to educate about the importance of the role of the media in avoiding the dissemination of negative stereotypes of women and to help implement principles of news coverage that avoid re-victimisation, encouraging ‘the narrative of stories of women leaders, transformers and generators of social change’. To this end, it will create a workshop in which, based on the study and analysis of materials and real case studies, it will reflect on other types of narratives and perspectives.

This project will collaborate with the network of Mexican journalists “Yo sí soy periodista” working in the city of Tijuana and has the collaboration of the cybermedia Revista 5W, specialised in migrations, the Gabo Journalism Foundation and the Baja Autonomous University of Baja California (Tijuana). Among the members of the work team are Santiago Tejedor, teacher and project leader, Martín Caparrós, Argentinean journalist and chronicler, David Jiménez, journalist and writer, Agus Morales, director of 5W, and teachers and researchers from the Gabo de Comunicación y Educación UAB, the teachers of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Autonomous University of Baja California Diana Denisse Merchant Ley, María de Jesús Montoya Robles, Ángel Cilserio Ruiz Rios and Feliciano Castro Loya.
