<p>The <strong><a href="http://www.gabinetecomunicacionyeducacion.com/es/proyectos/frontera-cronica-tijuana">Frontera Crónica</a></strong> project launches &#8216;<strong>Palabras fronterizas</strong>&#8216;, a series of dialogues directed by journalist <strong>Martín Caparrós</strong>. From <strong>March to November</strong> it will address different questions related to <strong>journalism, borders, migration, women and violence</strong>. The first dialogue &#8216;<em><strong>Women, borders and journalism</strong></em>&#8216; will bring together journalists <strong>Maria Teresa Ronderos and Luz Mely Reyes</strong>. It will take place on <strong>Monday 13 March at 18:00 (Spain) online</strong> (Zoom). Registration is free and can be done through the following <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfcJ8uBo6T8QZ3PojPhgm-qabGhYEsOzreArrS3gKrq7rDHsg/viewform" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>link</strong></a>.</p>

<p>This new initiative, which is part of the &#8216;Frontera Crónica&#8217; project, aims to <strong>promote critical dialogue</strong> on current issues related to the development of the <strong>journalistic profession</strong> in places of conflict, especially in Mexico. The different dialogues aim to reflect on journalistic words and challenges on a chronic frontier.</p>

<p>Under the direction of journalist <strong>Martín Caparrós</strong>, winner of the Ortega y Gasset Journalism Award 2023, the first dialogue will debate <strong>women, borders and journalism</strong> and will bring together <strong>Maria Teresa Ronderos</strong>, Colombian investigative journalist and columnist for El Espectador, and <strong>Luz Mely Reyes</strong>, Venezuelan journalist and analyst, member of the Gabo Foundation&#8217;s Board of Trustees. This session can be <strong>followed online</strong> (<strong>through the Zoom platform</strong>) on <strong>Monday 13 March at 18:00</strong>. <p>The project <a href="http://www.gabinetecomunicacionyeducacion.com/es/proyectos/frontera-cronica-tijuana"><strong>Frontera Crónica: Workshop on cross-border journalism and co-creation for the promotion of a critical view and the construction of other narratives on violence, women and migration</strong></a> has the collaboration of the <a href="https://fundaciongabo.org/es"><strong>Gabo Journalism Foundation</strong></a>, the <a href="https://www.uabc.mx/"><strong>Baja Autonomous University of Baja California</strong> </a>(Tijuana) and the Mexican journalists&#8217; network &#8220;<a href="https://www.cndh.org.mx/palabras-clave/5221/colectivo-yo-si-soy-periodista"><strong>Yo sí soy periodista</strong></a>&#8220;. Among its objectives are the <strong>recognition of the work of journalists in scenarios of violence, the proposal of new narratives around the borders marked by migration and violence</strong>, the provision of a directory of resources and platforms for Mexican journalists working on the border with the US, and the creation of a network of journalists working on the border with Mexico. The project also aims to create a directory of resources and platforms to improve their stories and content, generate citizen commitment interested in learning about other types of narratives on migration, women and violence in the border region, raise awareness among university students in Mexico and at the UAB of social problems and promote media literacy in journalistic and non-journalistic scenarios.</p>

<p>Egyptian students from the <strong>Arab Academy for Science Technology &amp; Maritime Transport (AASTMT)</strong> are part of the new <strong>Spring Arab School</strong> program. In the on-site classes, which are taking place from <strong>March 3 to May 31</strong>, students are being trained in different subjects related to audiovisual communication, media literacy, photography, digital writing and mobile journalism, among others.</p>

<p>The inaugural conference was given by <strong>José Manuel Pérez Tornero</strong> and <strong>Santiago Tejedor</strong>, academic directors of the Spring Arab School, <strong>Cristina Pulido</strong>, academic coordinator and <strong>María José Recoder</strong>, member of the team. The students also had the opportunity to attend the <strong>conferences &#8216;What is the future of universities&#8217;</strong>, given by <strong>Marius Martínez</strong>, Vice-rector of International Relations of the UAB and &#8216;<strong>Communicating in the field of sport: the case of the Olympic Games</strong>&#8216; by <strong>Emilio Fernández Peñ</strong>, director of the Center for Olympic Studies UAB.</p>

<p>Throughout the different weeks, students will study the following subjects: multimedia effects, media literacy, photography, script writing and Spanish language classes.</p>

<p>The <strong>Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación</strong> and the <strong>Arab Academy for Science Technology &amp; Maritime Transport (AASTMT)</strong> have organized this <strong>academic exchange space</strong>, characterized by learning through <strong>virtual classes</strong>, which aims to promote <strong>intercultural dialogue</strong> between students from the Cairo and Alexandria campuses. During this time, students will strengthen their skills in different fields and will deal with multiple topics such as the production of multimedia and digital content, introduction to new technologies, programming with <strong>Python, data analysis and big data</strong>, main applications of <strong>artificial intelligence</strong> or strategies and uses of sustainable development in international law, among others.</p>

<p><strong>Santiago Tejedor</strong>, director of the <strong>Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación</strong>, <strong>María José Recoder</strong> and <strong>Xavier Ortuño</strong>, members of the Office, have travelled to <strong>Cairo (Egypt)</strong> to meet with the <a href="https://aast.edu/en/"><strong>Arab Academy for Science Technology and Maritime Transport</strong> </a>and continue working within the<strong> framework of the agreement between the two institutions</strong>.</p>



<p>The UAB team visited the <strong>Spanish Embassy</strong> in Cairo together with the <strong>director of the Arab Academy Ismail Abdel Ghafar</strong>, the Cairo University professor <strong>Samy Tayie</strong> and the researcher of the Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación <strong>Sally Tayie</strong>, among other representatives of the Egyptian university. All of them were received by the Spanish Ambassador Álvaro Iranzo Gutiérrez. They also visited the university campuses of the institution: <strong>Cairo, Alexandria and Smart Village</strong>.</p>



<p>In addition, the Gabinete&#8217;s researchers had the opportunity to visit the <strong>Library of Alexandria</strong>, a historic institution that currently contains more than 4 million volumes, as well as museum spaces, galleries and research centres.</p>

<p>On 21 November, journalist <strong>Rosa María Calaf will receive the &#8220;Ítaca Award: A life of journalistic adventure&#8221;</strong> awarded by the <strong>Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación</strong> and the <a href="https://www.uab.cat/web/postgrado/master-en-periodismo-de-viajes-presencial-/informacion-general-1206597472083.html/param1-2812_es/"><strong>Master&#8217;s Degree in Travel Journalism</strong></a> of the Department of Journalism and Communication Sciences of the <strong>Faculty of Communication Sciences</strong> of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB).</p>

<p>In <strong>previous editions</strong>, the winners were <strong>Martín Caparrós, Pepa Roma , Jordi Évole , Sebastião Salgado and Miguel de la Quadra-Salcedo</strong> . The recognition seeks to highlight the journalistic or communicational trajectory of professionals committed to their work. The event, organised by the UAB Communication and Education Office and the UAB Master&#8217;s Degree in Travel Journalism, will take place at 9:00 a.m. on Monday 21 November in the Aula Magna of the UAB Faculty of Communication Sciences.</p>

<p><strong>Rosa María Calaf</strong> (Barcelona, 1945), a graduate in Law and Journalism, has dedicated her life to <strong>journalism and travel</strong>, making her the RTVE correspondent with the broadest and most diverse career. From her correspondent&#8217;s post in <strong>Moscow, Vienna, Hong Kong, Rome, New York, Beijing and Buenos Aires</strong>, she has worked informing the world from an ethical point of view and with a strong commitment to good journalism.</p>

<p>He was a member of the staff of TVE from 1970 to 2009 and was a <strong>member of the founding team</strong> of the Catalan television station <strong>TV3</strong> as director of programming and production (1982-1983). He has travelled to more than <strong>180 countries</strong> and continues to travel the world. He holds more than <strong>thirty awards</strong>, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Television Academy; the National Journalism Award of Catalonia; the Ondas Award for Best Professional Work; the United Nations Women Together Award; the Medal of the Hungarian Foreign Union for his defence of freedom; the Cirilio Rodríguez Award for Best Correspondent; the Cirilio Rodríguez Award for Best Correspondent of the Year; the Cirilio Rodríguez Award for Best Journalist of the Year; the Cirilio Rodríguez Award for Best Journalist of the Year; and the Cirilio Rodríguez Award for Best Correspondent of the Year; the Cirilio Rodríguez Award for Best Correspondent; the José Couso Award for Freedom of Expression; the Víctor de la Serna Award from the Madrid Press Association; the European University&#8217;s Career Achievement Award; and the Gold Medal of the Red Cross.</p>

<p>The <strong>Gabinete de Comunicación y de Educación</strong> is a <a href="http://gabinetecomunicacionyeducacion.com/es"><strong>consolidated group</strong></a> specialised in scientific research and dissemination, which belongs to the Department of Journalism and Communication Sciences of the <strong>UAB</strong>. Recognised by AGAUR (Agència de Gestió d&#8217;Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca) of the Generalitat de Catalunya as a <strong>Consolidated Research Group on the basis of its trajectory, projection and development</strong>, it develops projects and research in the field of convergence between communication and education. Since its creation, it has developed initiatives aimed at integrating, with awareness and freedom, communication technologies in the so-called global or knowledge society. Under the direction of Santiago Tejedor, the Office organises different master&#8217;s degrees, such as the Master&#8217;s Degree in Travel Journalism (on-site and online), the Master&#8217;s Degree in Communication and Education, the Master&#8217;s Degree in Environmental Communication and the Master&#8217;s Degree in Political and Electoral Communication Management. The group has a wide and varied collection of publications, in the form of scientific articles, books and book chapters, and other works, which is constantly being renewed. It also has a laboratory for teaching innovation projects, transfer and new formats that are conceived and developed from a perspective based on creativity and multidisciplinary work. Every year, the Cabinet organises an academic expedition that travels the world with students from different universities and degrees. This is the Tahina-Can Expedition, which has been awarded as the best educational project in Spain. It also has the portal Tu Aventura, the educational platform infoEDU and the newsgames and science project Reporteros de la ciencia.</p>

<p>The <strong>11th Conference on Communication, Travel and Adventure</strong>, promoted by the Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación and the <a href="http://masterperiodismoviajes.com+/">UAB Master&#8217;s Degree in Travel Journalism</a>, will explore new ways of narrating reality and telling stories in the current landscape of journalism and travel. The meeting, <em><strong>La aventura de vivir (y contarlo)</strong> </em>, will take place on <strong>Monday 21 November from 9:00 to 15:00 in the Aula Magna</strong> of the <strong>Faculty of Communication Sciences</strong> at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. It is supported by the <strong>Fundació Autònoma Solidària (FAS), IATI Seguros and Vueling.</strong></p>

<p>This year&#8217;s speakers include <strong>Rosa María Calaf</strong>, a Spanish journalist with a career spanning more than 26 years as a foreign correspondent for TVE, who will receive the<strong> Ítaca 2022 Award</strong> in recognition of her career and good practice of journalism. The Ítaca Prize, which in previous editions has been awarded to renowned journalists such as Martín Caparrós or Pepa Roma among others, is an award given by the UAB Communication and Education Office to highlight a career committed, through journalism, to human dignity, diversity and equality.</p>

<p>In the morning, from <strong>9:50 to 11:00</strong>, <strong>Miguel Ángel Tobías</strong>, film director and creator of the audiovisual format &#8216;Españoles por el mundo&#8217;, will talk about his new documentary series &#8216;<a href="https://elcaminointerior.es/">El camino interior</a>&#8216;, a work of 16 episodes in which the author walked the Camino de Santiago from León to Compostela and Finisterre, accompanied by prominent and recognised personalities to help others to transform their lives.</p>

<p>Afterwards, from <strong>11:20 to 11:40</strong>, <strong>Júlia Pírez Curell and Laura Riba Singla</strong> , in charge of the <strong>UAB Reception Programme</strong> (Area of Cooperation and Education for Global Justice, Fundació Autònoma Solidària) will explain the social actions carried out by this university entity in the talk &#8216;<strong>Near the refuge: the university as a space for international protection</strong>&#8216;. Within this space, Kelly Robledo, academic coordinator of the UAB Master in Travel Journalism, will talk about the project &#8216;Frontera Crónica: Cross-border journalism and co-creation workshop for the promotion of a critical view and the construction of other narratives on violence, women and migrations&#8217;, winner of the XXXIX call of the UAB Solidarity Fund for interuniversity cooperation projects led by PAS, PDI and students of the UAB. Afterwards, students from the UAB Master&#8217;s in Travel Journalism will present their final projects on three destinations: Malta, Morocco and Nuremberg.</p>

<p><strong>&#8216;Slaves of football. Anatomy of a World Cup</strong>&#8216; will be the last meeting of the morning. In it, from <strong>13:40 to 15:00</strong>, the journalists <strong>Martín Caparrós and Carme Barceló</strong>, together with the ex-footballer and communicator <strong>Julio Salinas</strong>, will reflect on the importance and social influence of football and its impact on the media. Specifically, they will discuss the next World Cup to be held in Qatar.</p>

<p>The event aims to become a meeting point for all <strong>travel and communication</strong> enthusiasts and committed journalism enthusiasts.</p>

<p>The <strong>Gabinete de Comunicación y de Educación</strong> is a <a href="http://gabinetecomunicacionyeducacion.com/es"><strong>consolidated group</strong></a> specialised in scientific research and dissemination, which belongs to the Department of Journalism and Communication Sciences of the <strong>UAB</strong>. Recognised by AGAUR (Agència de Gestió d&#8217;Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca) of the Generalitat de Catalunya as a <strong>Consolidated Research Group on the basis of its trajectory, projection and development</strong>, it develops projects and research in the field of convergence between communication and education. Since its creation, it has developed initiatives aimed at integrating, with awareness and freedom, communication technologies in the so-called global or knowledge society. Under the direction of Santiago Tejedor, the Office organises different master&#8217;s degrees, such as the Master&#8217;s Degree in Travel Journalism (on-site and online), the Master&#8217;s Degree in Communication and Education, the Master&#8217;s Degree in Environmental Communication and the Master&#8217;s Degree in Political and Electoral Communication Management. The group has a wide and varied collection of publications, in the form of scientific articles, books and book chapters, and other works, which is constantly being renewed. It also has a laboratory for teaching innovation projects, transfer and new formats that are conceived and developed from a perspective based on creativity and multidisciplinary work. Every year, the Cabinet organises an academic expedition that travels the world with students from different universities and degrees. This is the Tahina-Can Expedition, which has been awarded as the best educational project in Spain. It also has the portal Tu Aventura, the educational platform infoEDU and the newsgames and science project Reporteros de la ciencia.</p>

<p>The journalist <strong>Carolina Escudero</strong>, collaborator of the Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación, joins the project &#8216;<strong>Frontera Crónica: Cross-border journalism and co-creation workshop for the promotion of a critical view and the construction of other narratives on violence, women and migrations</strong>&#8216;. Escudero is a journalist and expert in social psychology of the media, her main line of research being communication and emotions.</p>

<p><strong>Carolina Escudero</strong> has specialised in <strong>Social Psychology</strong> (PhD and postdoc, JFK University, Argentina), Sexual Difference (MA, University of Barcelona), Journalism (BA, Université Robert Schuman, France). Her research area focuses on the <strong>role of emotions in journalistic production</strong> (trauma, vicarious trauma, empathy with sources, self-care of journalists) in the mediatisation of cases of enforced disappearances (victims/ re-victimisation, stigma). She teaches seminars and researches on human rights issues, reparation of victims through stories and the emotional health of journalists. She has studied and worked in Argentina, Belgium, Bolivia, China, Spain, the United States, France and the Netherlands. She was awarded the following grants: Leonardo Da Vinci of the European Union (Brussels, 2001); Research and Creativity, University of Missouri, (USA 2018) and Postdoctoral Research UJFK (Argentina, 2021). Research and Solidarity Award, Spain (2017) and distinction for International Journalism, FOPEA Argentina 2013.</p>

<p>In November, and for one year, this project will be developed through two practical workshops, two days of reflection and a series of debates in the border city of Tijuana (Mexico). The project, which has the collaboration of the Gabo Journalism Foundation, the Baja Autonomous University of Baja California (Tijuana) and the Mexican journalists&#8217; network &#8220;Yo sí soy periodista&#8221; has established 5 lines of action: to promote cross-border journalism, to change spaces for reflection, co-creation and debate with journalists in Mexico, to modify news coverage of migratory movements, to contribute to different and rigorous news coverage and to create journalistic stories that raise awareness among the population, to contribute to promoting the narrative of stories of women leaders, transformers and generators of social change and to provide journalists with tools, platforms, networks and resources to react to complicated situations arising from threats, aggression or other types of conflict.</p>

<p>The <strong>working team</strong> is made up of the following journalists and teachers: <strong>Santiago Tejedor</strong>, teacher and head of the project, <strong>Martín Caparrós</strong>, Argentine journalist and chronicler, <strong>David Jiménez</strong> , journalist and writer, <strong>Agus Morales</strong> , director of 5W , <strong>Cristina Pulido</strong> , lecturer Serra Húnter of the Department of Journalism and Communication Sciences UAB, <strong>María José Recoder</strong> , PhD in Information Sciences UAB, <strong>Carolina Escudero</strong>, associate professor of the Department of Journalism and Communication Sciences UAB, <strong>Beatriz Villarejo</strong>, PhD in Education UB, and PhD and Master students <strong>Kelly Robledo</strong>, <strong>Belén Sancho</strong> and <strong>Elena Hita</strong>. Also taking part are <strong>Diana Denisse Merchant Ley</strong>, <strong>María de Jesús Montoya Robles</strong>, <strong>Ángel Cilserio Ruiz Rios</strong> and <strong>Feliciano Castro Loya</strong> from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Autonomous University of Baja California. The co-organising team in Tijuana of the collective &#8220;Yo Sí Soy Periodista&#8221; is made up of journalists <strong>Sonia Elva Rosas de Anda</strong>, <strong>Alma Yolanda Morales González</strong>, <strong>Inés García Ramos</strong> and <strong>José Ibarra Amador</strong>.</p>

<p><strong>Josep Alonso</strong>, Head of Research and Conservation at the Barcelona Zoo, took part in the eighteenth session of the <strong>Planeta UAB lecture series</strong>, an initiative of the Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación (UAB) aimed at students of its master&#8217;s degrees.</p>

<p>This cycle of conferences is part of the project &#8220;<strong>Planet UAB: The journey to the other &#8211; equals in differences</strong>&#8221; organised by the Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación during the academic year 2020-2021, with the support of the Solidarity Fund of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, which organised a series of activities and awareness-raising actions based on the concept of the UAB campus as a &#8220;planet&#8221; and which dealt with major issues such as the culture of peace, sustainability, the environment and interculturality, among others.</p>

<p>Students from the <a href="https://www.uab.cat/web/postgrado/master-en-periodismo-de-viajes-presencial-/informacion-general-1206597472083.html/param1-2812_es/"><strong>Master&#8217;s in Travel Journalism</strong></a>, the <a href="https://www.uab.cat/web/postgrado/master-en-comunicacion-del-medio-ambiente/informacion-general-1206597472083.html/param1-4342_es/"><strong>Master&#8217;s in Environmental Communication</strong></a> and the <a href="https://www.uab.cat/web/postgrado/master-en-comunicacion-y-educacion-online-/informacion-general-1206597472083.html/param1-2395_es/"><strong>Master&#8217;s in Communication and Education</strong></a> participated in this eighteenth session with <strong>Josep Alonso</strong>, entitled &#8216;<em><strong>Case Study: Zoos</strong></em>&#8216;. In it, he presented the biodiversity conservation and research work in which the Barcelona Zoo is involved. Alonso explained to the students the desire of this institution to become a benchmark for conservation and stressed the importance of biodiversity conservation, in reference to the decline of species. The objectives of the Barcelona Zoo Foundation include contributing to research to combat the extinction of species, promoting the dissemination of scientific practice applied to fauna, conservation among visitors to contribute to their awareness and education, and improving the conditions of the zoo itself, among others.</p>

<p><strong>Josep Alonso</strong> is <strong>Head of Research and Conservation at Barcelona Zoo</strong>. Graduate in Veterinary Science. Diploma in Advanced Studies, Marine Biology and Aquaculture. Specialised in veterinary medicine applied to marine wildlife, diagnostic imaging methodologies applied to wildlife, planning and development of wildlife conservation projects.</p>

<p>The Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación UAB starts working on the project &#8216; <em><strong>Frontera Crónica: Workshop on cross-border journalism and co-creation for the promotion of a critical view and the construction of other narratives on violence, women and migrations</strong> </em>&#8216;. In November, and for one year, this project will be developed in which two practical workshops, two days of reflection and a cycle of debates will be created in the border city of Tijuana (Mexico). The project is made up of an inter-university team of 11 women and 7 men.</p>

<p>Mexico has become the most dangerous country in the world to work as a journalist. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), a total of 142 journalists have been killed in the country between 1992 and 2022. This project, in collaboration with the online media Revista 5W, which specialises in migration, the Gabo Journalism Foundation, the Baja Autonomous University of Baja California (Tijuana) and the Mexican journalists&#8217; network &#8220;Yo sí soy periodista&#8221; has established five lines of action: to promote cross-border journalism, spaces for reflection, co-creation and debate with journalists in Mexico, to modify news coverage of migratory movements, to present a different and rigorous informative treatment and create journalistic stories that raise awareness among the population, to contribute to promoting the narrative of stories of women leaders, transformers and generators of social change and to provide journalists with tools, platforms, networks and resources to react to complicated situations arising from threats, aggressions or other types of conflicts.</p>

<p>A group of more than 100 Egyptian students from the<strong> Arab Academy for Science Technology &amp; Maritime Transport (AASTMT) are taking part in the UAB Summer School</strong>. During these days, which are taking place from <strong>13 to 28 July</strong>, the students are being trained in <strong>journalism, communication and Spanish language</strong>.</p>



<p><strong>The Communication and Education Office and the Arab Academy for Science Technology &amp; Maritime Transport (AASTMT)</strong> have organised this space for academic exchange, characterised by learning through practical workshops, which seeks to promote <strong>intercultural dialogue</strong>. The inaugural event, which took place on <strong>15 July</strong>, was chaired by <strong>Cristina Pulido</strong>, Serra Húnter lecturer in the Department of Journalism and researcher at the Cabinet, <strong>Samy Tayie</strong>, lecturer at Cairo University, and <strong>Sally Tayie</strong>, doctor at UAB and collaborator at the Cabinet. The students listened to <strong>lectures by Jordi Gili</strong>, telecommunications expert and international speaker, on <em><strong>&#8220;Leadership in the hyperconnected world&#8221;</strong></em>, and <strong>Carolina Escudero</strong>, PhD in Social Psychology, on <em><strong>&#8220;Communication and emotions&#8221;</strong></em>.</p>



<p>During their stay in Barcelona, Egyptian students will <strong>strengthen their communication and audiovisual</strong> skills through <strong>theory classes and practical workshops</strong> related to writing for the media and audiovisual and mobile communication. As part of this programme, students will be required to develop and present their own <strong>audiovisual projects</strong>. They are also complementing their studies with cultural<em> visits in the city and other activities</em>.</p>



<p>The<strong> agreement</strong> between the <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.uab.cat/" target="_blank"><strong>Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona</strong></a> and the <a rel="noopener" href="https://aast.edu/en/" target="_blank"><strong>Arab Academy for Science Technology and Transportation of Egypt</strong></a> aims to foster intercultural dialogue and synergies between the two institutions.</p>
