The session is part of the Media and Information Literacy Event Series at the 3rd World Higher Education Conference. The International Media and Information Literacy Institute was established with the support of UNESCO and twelve international universities signed the agreement establishing the institute. “In response to the general need to raise awareness of media and information literacy, UNESCO and NORDICOM commissioned a feasibility study on the establishment of an International Institute for Media and Information Literacy. Universities from different regions of the world have agreed to deepen academic co-operation in media and information literacy”.

This session will focus mainly on the role of the institute in raising awareness of media and information literacy and promoting intercultural dialogue. Participants from different partner universities will present their activities in the area of media and information literacy: Manuel Pinto (University of Minho, Portugal), Santiago Tejedor (UAB, Barcelona), Suraj Olunifesi (University of Lagos, Nigeria), Carolyn Wilson (McLuhan Foundation, Canada), Sally Tayie (Cairo University, coordinator of the institute), Felipe Chibas Ortiz (University of Sao Paolo, Brazil) and Jun Sakamoto (Hosei University, Japan). The event will be moderated by Samy Tayie, professor at Cairo University (Egypt).

Since 2013, the Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación has been collaborating with the Arab Academy for Science Technology and Maritime Transport in research and teaching projects, forming a bridge of cooperation between the Arab world and Spain. This collaboration is part of the Unitwin agreement on Media Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue (MILID).
