This one-year project is funded by the European Media and Information Foundation (EMIF), which aims to support initiatives related to information verification and media literacy, as well as research projects to address the phenomenon of misinformation in Europe.

Media literacy is one of the main lines of research of the Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación. This project will work on a literature review to know the state of disinformation in Europe and how to combat it through media literacy, the creation of a comparative mapping of policies on disinformation in member countries and the identification of good practices and the elaboration of a final report.

On 2 October, Santiago Tejedor, Cristina Pulido and Maria José Recoder, members of the Cabinet and the project, participated in the ‘EMIF Annual Event: Funding the Fight Against Disinformation‘, held in Lisbon. The event brought together different media organisations, researchers, NGOs and policy makers from all over Europe to discuss the challenges and opportunities of fighting against disinformation in Europe.

The Gabinete de Comunicación y de Educación is a consolidated group specialised in scientific research and dissemination, which belongs to the Department of Journalism and Communication Sciences of the UAB. Recognised by AGAUR (Agència de Gestió d’Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca) of the Generalitat de Catalunya as a Consolidated Research Group on the basis of its trajectory, projection and development, it develops projects and research in the field of convergence between communication and education. Since its creation, it has developed initiatives aimed at integrating, with awareness and freedom, communication technologies in the so-called global or knowledge society. Under the direction of Santiago Tejedor, the Office organises different master’s degrees, such as the Master’s Degree in Travel Journalism (on-site and online), the Master’s Degree in Communication and Education, the Master’s Degree in Environmental Communication and the Master’s Degree in Political and Electoral Communication Management. The group has a wide and varied collection of publications, in the form of scientific articles, books and book chapters, and other works, which is constantly being renewed. It also has a laboratory for teaching innovation projects, transfer and new formats that are conceived and developed from a perspective based on creativity and multidisciplinary work. Every year, the Cabinet organises an academic expedition that travels the world with students from different universities and degrees. This is the Tahina-Can Expedition, which has been awarded as the best educational project in Spain. It also has the portal Tu Aventura, the educational platform InfoEDU and the newsgames and science project Reporteros de la Ciencia.

The day will begin with the round table entitled The adventure of telling the world in which David Rull, Egyptologist, travel guide specialising in North Africa and lecturer in the Department of Journalism at the UAB, will talk to Jordi Llompart, journalist, filmmaker and writer.

The second round table will be dedicated to two projects that are committed to change. It will be moderated by Ricardo Carniel, lecturer in the Department of Journalism at the UAB, and will include the participation of Juanjo Conejo, director of the project Technolita and the blue planet, an educational initiative to raise awareness among children of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda, Elsa Velasco, coordinator of the latest edition of the PerCientEx project and member of the Catalan Association of Scientific Communication (ACCC), and two members of the project Zoroastro, a short film made by a group of students at the UAB in commemoration of the murder of Chico Mendes, a Brazilian environmental activist. and two members of the Zoroastro project, a short film made by a group of UAB students in commemoration of the murder of Chico Mendes, a Brazilian environmental activist.

Cristina Pulido, Professor Serra Hunter from the Department of Journalism at the UAB, will introduce the next round table dedicated to Uninformed Consumption. Brenda Chávez, journalist and researcher specialising in consumption, sustainability and culture and member of the female collective of investigative journalists on consumption Carro de Combate will reflect on the subject together with Javier Raboso, sociologist at the Complutense University of Madrid, human rights activist and head of the Democracy and Culture of Peace campaign at Greenpeace Spain.

The day will continue with the presentation of three books on the subject. Santiago Tejedor , director of the Department of Journalism at the UAB and co-director of the Masters in Travel Journalism and Environmental Communication, will moderate the round table with Jordi Serrallonga, archaeologist, naturalist, expedition guide and author of the book Dioses con pies de barro (Editorial Crítica); Gabi Martínez, writer and editor specialising in travel books and author of Un cambio de verdad (Editorial Seix Barrel); and Odile Rodríguez de la Fuente, graduate in Biological Sciences and Film Production, creator of the Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente Foundation and author of the book Félix. Un hombre en la tierra (Editorial geoPlaneta).

Finally, Marciano Venté , director of the Regional Observatory of Information and Communication Media of Eastern Colombia (ORMIC) and professor at the UNAB, Colombia, will be in charge of moderating the last round table entitled A Planet in Danger, which will include the intervention of Heriberto Araújo , journalist, writer and lecturer who reports on the environment, human rights and Latin America and who is currently writing a book on the Amazon rainforest. And with the participation of two projects developed in Peru: Micaela Egúsquiza, a graduate in communication and journalism, will present the documentary PACIFICUM, return of the ocean; and María Elena Carbajal, journalist and environmental and social communicator, will present the initiatives carried out by the Wildlife Conservation Society Peru.
